What is Medifast?

The meal that contains meat and vegetables is the only one that must be measured or weighed with a food scale or measuring cup before consumed, with 5-8 ounces of low-fat meat choices. Salt, pepper, herbs and spices may be added if desired. 1-2 tsps of condiments such as ketchup, mustard or barbecue sauce may be used. You must also drink a minimum of 64 oz of non-caloric fluids daily and water is strongly recommended.

The Medifast Program suggests that you add a low to moderate exercise routine to the plan. Starting with low intensity aerobic exercise such as walking, swimming or cycling for about 10 minutes a day, three days a week. When this feels comfortable, you are encouraged to increase gradually the time and intensity.

Why does Medifast work?

Medifast works because each meal has the correct balance of carbohydrates and protein. This plan is nutrient dense, with low-calorie meal replacement foods that cause ketosis, a state in which the release of free fatty acids is promoted to be used as the energy source helping you lose weight fast while preserving muscle tissue. This is also keeps you from being hungry and boosts your levels of energy. Researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health report that after 34 weeks, people with diabetes participating in the trial who were using Medifast's portion controlled, meal replacement program (diet of soups, oatmeal, bars and a variety of shakes), lost twice as much weight and were twice as likely to complete the study as participants following a standard food diet based on the dietary guidelines of the American Diabetes Association (shop for their own food and manage their own portions).
