Medifast: Lose Weight and Control Diabetes

The Easy Solution to Manage Weight, Blood Glucose and Cholesterol Levels

By Nina Nazor

What is Medifast?

Medifast is an easy and healthy low-carb, high-protein diet program that helps you lose weight and control blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Medifast has been scientifically proven at Johns Hopkins University to help people with diabetes lose weight quickly and safely while achieving good diabetes control.

What is The Medifast Plan for People with Diabetes?

The plan is called “The 5 & 1 Program”, which is comprised by 5 Medifast meals and 1 "lean and green" meal. You don't get hungry on this program because you're supposed to eat every 2-3 hours and the meals are satisfying. The Medifast Plan is great for busy people because you can forget about preparing foods and counting portions or carbs, you just choose the meal replacements you wish to have throughout the day, and add an easy salad and lean protein meal once a day at any time you wish.

How does Medifast work?

The 5 & 1 Program provides you with 800-1000 calories per day if you are a woman and a little more if you are a man. Meals should be eaten approximately 3 hours apart to provide you with proper nutrition and energy throughout the day.

You have more than 70 different meals to choose from in the form of shakes, bars, drinks, oatmeal, chili, soups, puddings and more.

The meal that contains meat and vegetables is the only one that must be measured or weighed with a food scale or measuring cup before consumed, with 5-8 ounces of low-fat meat choices. Salt, pepper, herbs and spices may be added if desired. 1-2 tsps of condiments such as ketchup, mustard or barbecue sauce may be used. You must also drink a minimum of 64 oz of non-caloric fluids daily and water is strongly recommended.

The Medifast Program suggests that you add a low to moderate exercise routine to the plan. Starting with low intensity aerobic exercise such as walking, swimming or cycling for about 10 minutes a day, three days a week. When this feels comfortable, you are encouraged to increase gradually the time and intensity.

Why does Medifast work?

Medifast works because each meal has the correct balance of carbohydrates and protein. This plan is nutrient dense, with low-calorie meal replacement foods that cause ketosis, a state in which the release of free fatty acids is promoted to be used as the energy source helping you lose weight fast while preserving muscle tissue. This is also keeps you from being hungry and boosts your levels of energy. That is the exact mechanism of action of any good balanced low-carb diet and that is why this program works: promotes weight loss and diabetes control while saving you the time and money you spend in buying and cooking your meals; you get your meals delivered to your door and besides that you should just plan your lean meat and vegetables meals for each day.

What is the scientific research behind the Medifast Program for people with diabetes?

Medifast has been scientifically tested in trials done at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institutes of Health. This program has been recommended by thousands of physicians for more than 20 years.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health report that after 34 weeks, people with diabetes participating in the trial who were using Medifast's portion controlled, meal replacement program (diet of soups, oatmeal, bars and a variety of shakes), lost twice as much weight and were twice as likely to complete the study as participants following a standard food diet based on the dietary guidelines of the American Diabetes Association (shop for their own food and manage their own portions).

With Medifast you don't need to measure portions and the meal replacements are easy to use. Moreover, you can select the meal replacements and build your own menus to get a customized plan. You'll receive your food along with a Quick Start Book containing all the information you need to get started.

If you have diabetes you must see your doctor before starting the Medifast program to discuss blood sugar monitoring, potassium monitoring, your diabetes pills, calorie levels and adjustments to your medications, because Medifast is a low calorie, low glycemic program. This program is not recommended for people with type 1 diabetes. If you want to discuss Medifast with your physician, print out the informational sheets and take them with you to you next doctors visit.
